We accredit inspection bodies to confirm they perform inspections with technical competence, reliable methods, and unbiased reporting, so results can be trusted by regulators, buyers, and the public.
According to ISO, an inspection is “an examination of a product, process, service, or installation or their design and determination of its conformity with specific requirements or, on the basis of professional judgment, with general requirements.”
Inspection bodies carry out inspections on behalf of:
Private clients
Parent organizations, or
Authorities, including regulatory authorities
The objective of inspection is to provide the client with information on whether inspected items conform to applicable specifications—found in regulations, standards, inspection schemes, or contracts. Inspection helps clients evaluate compliance with quality, safety, and fitness-for-purpose requirements.
Accreditation supports confidence in inspection results and can help improve acceptance of products and services by confirming that inspection activities are performed competently and consistently.
The AIA provides accreditation to inspection bodies in accordance with ISO/IEC 17020, the international standard for the operation of bodies performing inspection.
ISO/IEC 17020 accreditation evaluates, among other elements:
Technical competence for the requested inspection scope
Impartiality and independence in inspection activities
Consistent methods and reporting
Management of personnel competence and ongoing oversight
Control of records, equipment (where applicable), and inspection processes
